Our last night in Europe was spent in Dusseldorf trying another local favorite, the altbier. Alt is brown in color and a little light, like a Kolsch, but unlike it’s delicate cousin, the altbier is bitter. In the old Uerige brewery I had three little glasses of the stuff and the closes comparison I can come up with is Bitter American. It went great with pretzels and the weizen, while decent if a little sweet, just reminded me that I wanted more alt. Down around the corner we stopped into a bar that served wine, and I had a taste of Diebels Alt which was still good, but less bitter. It was a nice end to our European adventure.
