Last night was my first time brewing with my brothers. Dan has been at it for a while. Paul has made a few batches. Last night we made what we hope will turn out to be a Belgian wheat. Paul had a recipe for a hefeweizen, but added some dark specialty malts, orange peel, and coriander. Really it was a giant experiment.
The smell was amazing. Like oatmeal, sweet delicious oatmeal. The finished wort smelled like bread dough with a hint of banana. But the spent grains tasted like oatmeal made from the shells of sunflower seeds. The wort tasted a bit like bready water. Yeah, I tasted all of the parts. I didn’t taste the yeast though; it smelled like sliced ham.
We only made a gallon, but it will take a month to finish fermenting in all the different buckets. Somewhere around the Fourth of July expect something crazy.
